Our Faculty

Our teachers and staff at BCA are the strength of the school. All of our teachers are fully accredited and bring a wide range of experience to the school. In addition to providing a high standard of education, our staff seek to live the Christian principles they teach, providing an example to the students in both word and deed.

Our teachers' desire to work in partnership with parents, and parents are encouraged to meet with the teacher if they have any questions or concerns about their child's progress.


Gord McNeice (Principal)

Mr. McNeice has been a Burlington resident since childhood. He has been an educator for 23 years and came to BCA from the Halton Board of Education. He has a Masters in Education and is a Specialist in Physical Education. He has a deep commitment to creating an educational climate that enables students to achieve to their full potential.

Erin Trute (School Secretary)

As well as being BCA's full time secretary and receptionist, Mrs. Trute heads up the Social Fund and associated activities, helps coordinate meals for families in need, purchases gifts or cards as needed, serves on the Volunteer Appreciation Committee and the Uniform Committee and works closely with the Advancement and Recruitment Co-Ordinator for school functions and activities. She is a wife and mother of 3 University students. She loves traveling and reading and enjoys walking and Pilates.

Sue Ann Rowat (Junior Kindergarten Teacher)

Mrs. Rowat graduated from McGill University, has courses in Library Science, and has taught all age levels. She maintains the database for the library for the Accelerated Reader Program. For the 2007-2008 school year, she will be our Junior Kindergarten Teacher.

Jane Shantz (Senior Kindergarten Teacher)

Jane is our Kindergarten teacher. She has her B.A. and B.Ed. from Redeemer University College, and a Bachelor of Religious Education from Tyndale College. She is the mother of two young adults. Jane loves kids. She also loves to be creative, enjoys interior design, and plays the flute. Janes duties include arranging for chapel speakers, electives, Christmas concert, Grandparents Day, and SK graduation ceremony.

Colleen Izsak (Grade 1)

Colleen is the grade one teacher. She has a B.A. and a B.Ed.. Colleen serves on student council, hot lunch committee, healthy living committee and the electives committee. She is a wife and mother of three teenagers . She enjoys running, hiking, cooking (her husbands) and spending time with her family.

Candice Fryer (Grade 2)

Candice is the grade two teacher. She has her diploma in Early Childhood Education, her honors from Ryerson University, and her Masters of Science in Education from Medaille College. She is in heading up the Book Fair, Grandparents Day and Christmas Family Night. She is engaged to a wonderful man and is currently planning her wedding, and searching the planet for a new house.

Sharon Thorlakson (Grade 3)

Sharon is teaching grade three this year. She has a diploma in Early Childhood Education from Seneca College and a B.A. and teachers credential (B.Ed. equivalent) from Simpson University in Redding, California. Sharon will be organizing the Spelling Bee and Speech Meet activities as well as helping with the Grandparents Tea committee and the Volunteer Appreciation committee. She is married to Paul and they have three beautiful daughters. Sharon enjoys reading and gardening and spending time with her family.

Heather Crossing (Grade 4 & Part-time VP)

Heather is a part time Grade 4 teacher and part time Vice Principal. She has an honours degree in Physical Education from York University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto. She has her Primary Specialist and Physical Education Specialist qualifications from Brock University and recently completed her Principal Qualification (Part 1) through the Ontario Principals Council. She is married and has three daughters. She enjoys running and gardening.

Jessica Purdy (Grade 4 & Part-time VP)

Jessica is the part time Grade 4 teacher and part time Vice Principal of the Primary Grades. She has her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Messiah College in Pennsylvania. She was responsible for implementing our Accelerated Reading Program and works on Curriculum Development. She has been with BCA for 13 years and is excited to send her first child to JK this year.

Dan Cope (Grade 5/6 Homeroom)

Dan will be starting his second year at the academy as the Grade 5/6 rotary teacher for Language Arts, Science and Environmental Studies. He has his honours BA from McMaster, and his B. Ed. from Western. Dans duties will include set up and music for Chapel, as well as coaching various sports teams. His interests range from rock climbing and karate to playing the guitar.

Teresa Hawton (Grades 7/8 Homeroom)

Teresa is the grade 7/8 and rotary Math and Computers teacher. She has a B.A.(Honours) and a B.Ed. She serves on student council, the social committee and runs the after school homework club and 7/8 trip fundraising. She is the official homemade skor bar supplier for the BCA staff. She enjoys swimming; camping, reading and sleeping (dont call her after 8:00pm).

Shannon Morrow (ALPA Director)

We are thrilled to welcome Miss Morrow to our staff this year as our ALPA Director. Shannon graduated from Liberty University in Lynchburg VA, having attending there on a full track scholarship. She comes to us from Oakville Christian School with many years of teaching and coaching experience , as well as glowing testimonials from students, parents and teachers alike who are sorry to see her go. She has achieved her Level 3 Theory and Technical Coaching Certificate in Basketball and has countless ideas for our athletic program at BCA.

Maria Makonnen (Grade 1 - 8 French)

Mme. Makonnen was born and raised in Ethiopia and came to Canada in 1976. She has a B.A. in Linguistics from Guelph University, a B. Ed. from Redeemer University College and a Masters of Education from the University of Toronto (O.I.S.E). She is also trained in AIM (Accelerated Integrated Method) created by Wendy Maxwell and has been teaching French with AIM to Grades 4-8 and is excited about extending the French program to the primary grades. Mme Makonnen has worked and lived in France, Switzerland, Malawi (Africa) and speaks Amharic, her mother tongue, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Mme Makonnen also teaches Grade 7 & 8 French at Dundas Calvin Christian School.

Holly Hanekamp (Music Grades 1 - 8)

Mrs. Hanekamp graduated from Columbia International University in Columbia, South Carolina with a Bachelor's degree, majoring in Education and Biblical Studies. She previously taught in the Halton Board, before coming to BCA. As well as teaching part time at BCA, she helps organize our Christmas Family Night Program.

Jane Smith (Resource Teacher)

Mrs. Smith received her Specialist in Special Education from Brock University. She has taught for over 25 years. Mrs. Smith works 3 mornings a week at BCA, providing assistance and support to students who need extra help. Mrs. Smith helps co ordinate all the details for Grandparents Day. Mrs. Smith has 3 grown children and enjoys spending time with her 2 granddaughters

Ingrid Cope (ESL Teacher)

Ingrid enjoyed many years at the academy as the J.K. teacher, but will be starting year 29 as the ESL teacher which she is enjoying immensely. She has her B.A. from McMaster, and her B.Ed. from Brock. Ingrid is married with 3 grown children who also graduated from the academy! Her duties include Spelling Bee and Speech Meet, as well as various social committees. Ingrid loves cooking with her daughter, travelling and reading when she has the time!

Rachel Kooiman (Student Support Worker)

Mrs. Kooiman received a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science degree from Brock University. This is Mrs. Kooiman's second year working as a Student Support Worker in BCA's intermediate division. In her spare time, Mrs. Kooiman loves playing the piano and provides accompaniments for the BCA music program.

Beth Anger (SOTA School of Music Administrator)

Beth taught Kindergarten in the Public System for 34 years and after retiring, has been teaching piano lessons at BCA for the past 6 years. She has been Administrator of the SOTA School of Music for the past 3 years.

Jann Schlett (Advancement and Recruitment Co-Ordinator)

Mrs. Schlett is instrumental in making things happen at Burlington Christian Academy! She handles all of our media operations, and runs BCA Social Activities & Publicity. She's our "resident pro" at organizing golf tournaments and is actively involved in our Good Neighbour Campaign with some of our students.
